️ The 15 kg Soft Bag Rule

All light aircraft used for fly-in safaris have a strict baggage allowance of 15 kg per person. Bags must be soft-sided — no hard-shell suitcases, backpacks with external frames, or rigid carry-on cases. This is a strict safety regulation from the aircraft operators. Items over 15 kg can be stored securely at your Zanzibar hotel.

Pack light. Leave the big suitcase at the hotel. Everything you need for a 1-day safari fits in a small day bag.

What to Wear

  • Neutral colours: Khaki, olive, tan, grey, brown. Animals do not respond to these colours.
  • Long sleeves: Protects from sun, insects, and early morning chill in the vehicle.
  • Comfortable trousers: Light zip-off trousers are ideal — cool in the heat, warm in the morning.
  • Closed shoes: Trainers or comfortable walking shoes. Flip-flops are not appropriate in the vehicle or at the airstrip.
  • Light jacket or fleece: The early morning flight and first game drive can be cool (18–22°C). You warm up quickly.
  • Wide-brim hat: Sun protection in the open-top vehicle is essential. A hat is highly recommended.

Colours to AVOID

  • Bright colours: Red, yellow, orange, blue — these startle wildlife and reduce sighting opportunities.
  • White: Shows dust badly, attracts tsetse flies in some areas.
  • Camouflage / military patterns: Illegal in Tanzania. Do not wear camouflage clothing at any time in Tanzania.
