Tanzania's Currency

Tanzania's official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). As of 2025, exchange rates are approximately TZS 2,600–2,700 per USD 1 (rates fluctuate — check current rates before travel). Most tourist services in Tanzania, including safaris, flights and major hotels, quote and accept prices in US Dollars.

US Dollars in Tanzania

The US Dollar is effectively a parallel currency in Tanzania's tourism industry. Safari packages, park fees, hotel rates and most tourist services are quoted in USD. USD cash is widely accepted, making it the most practical currency to carry for safari visitors.

An important note: Only USD notes dated 2006 or later are accepted in Tanzania. Older USD notes (pre-2006 series) are refused at most exchange bureaux and businesses. Check the dates on your notes before travelling.

ATMs in Zanzibar

ATMs are readily available in Zanzibar Town (Stone Town) and in major tourist resort areas. Most dispense Tanzanian Shillings; some also offer USD. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted. American Express is less reliably accepted. Notify your bank of your travel dates before departure to prevent card blocks.

Card Payments

Major hotels, lodges and some restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard. Many smaller businesses and safari operators are cash-based. We recommend carrying a mix of USD cash and a card as backup. Our safari packages can be paid by:

  • USD cash on the day of departure (day trips)
  • Bank transfer in advance (all packages)
  • Card payment — contact us for details

Exchange Bureaux

Currency exchange is available at Zanzibar International Airport and in Stone Town. Airport rates are generally worse than in-town rates. For Tanzanian Shillings for daily expenses (tips, small purchases), exchange a modest amount at a reputable in-town bureau. Do not exchange currency with street vendors.

Budget for Daily Expenses

Most safari costs are covered by your package. Allow approximately USD 20–40 per person per day for personal expenses: tips, drinks beyond those included, souvenirs, and any optional activities you add. Keep small denominations of USD for tips.
